About the event

Session Description

Diabetes continues to disproportionately affect Native and racially/ethnically diverse communities, driven by inequities in food systems, healthcare access, and cultural disconnects in education and care. In honor of National Diabetes Month and Indigenous Heritage Month, this November Learning Series will examine how food systems, cultural traditions, and systemic inequities shape diabetes risk, care, and outcomes in Native and racially/ethnically diverse communities. By centering cultural relevance, food sovereignty, and equity in healthcare, the discussion will highlight strategies to strengthen prevention, improve access to early screening, and expand representation in research.

The session will also emphasize the role of community health workers and peer advocates in advancing health literacy and building trust. Speakers will highlight the importance of early screening, increasing diversity in clinical research, and integrating culturally relevant education and advocacy. The conversation will also spotlight the critical role of community health workers and peer advocates in bridging gaps…
